It is clear that digital transformation is no longer an option, but an imperative. In fact, recent Accenture research found that, in the three years leading up to 2018, companies that led their industry in adopting the technology grew twice as fast as laggards. Today, they are growing five times faster. The risk is no longer just that of being left behind, but of being eliminated altogether.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

But beware, digital transformation isn't just about technology. Success involves more than just sourcing competent suppliers and training users. These initiatives can no longer be left to the sole discretion of technology leaders and IT experts, but must involve a variety diversified<\/strong> of stakeholders<\/strong> ecosystem<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We desperately need a shift in focus. We need to do more than just implement the technology. Basic goals such as optimization<\/strong> of the costs<\/strong> and the improvement<\/strong> of the processes<\/strong> they can no longer be the ultimate goal. Leaders must inspire and empower their entire organization to boldly reimagine their work environment,<\/strong> customer needs, product offering and even the purpose<\/em> of the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In our work to help some of the world's best performing organizations overcome the challenges of digital transformation, we focus on four key principles:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Digital transformation is not synonymous with innovation<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The pace of digital innovation over the past few decades has been shocking to say the least. Ecommerce, social media, mobile web, and even video streaming didn't begin to have a real impact on businesses until about a decade ago. They are now significant components of the environment<\/strong> competitive<\/strong> for almost all businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So it should come as no surprise that with the advanced technologies available today, such as robotic process automation, machine learning, cloud computing, and more, it's easy for leaders to get lost in all the incredible possibilities. Nevertheless, digital transformation is not about innovation<\/strong>. It's about getting better business results. That's why we advise our customers to start with business-related questions, such as "How could we better serve our customers through faster and more flexible technology?" or "How could we leverage artificial intelligence to improve employee experiences and retain top talent?". Once you have identified your business goals, you can work backwards to making decisions in technological matters<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, one of Andrea's customers in the online apparel industry sought to improve cost efficiency by reducing inventory. This simple goal led them to invest in systems that formed the basis for a much larger transformation that leveraged data analytics to reduce the costs of maintaining excess inventory in their warehouse while improving customer satisfaction. customers and profit margins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enlist the enthusiasts<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The first thing any transformation must go through is the resistence<\/strong>. The status quo always has inertia on its side and never gives up its power gracefully. However, no organization is monolithic. There are always pockets of enthusiasm that can be identified and exploited. You always want to start in an area where the enthusiasts are in the majority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, when Experian's CIO tried to move from traditional technology to a cloud-based architecture to offer his customers real-time access to data, he knew some within the company would not like it. However, because he started with already cloud-enthusiastic product managers, he was able to get around the initial resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Japanese bank had a similar problem with blockchain-related technologies. Senior leaders were thrilled with the possibilities. But they knew that many middle managers would see it as a distraction from more proven lines of business. So instead of focusing their efforts on existing customers, they moved to a new segment of tech-savvy young entrepreneurs who would be drawn to the novelty of the offering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Start with a change<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Each transformation is driven by a sense of vision and destiny. Change leaders can try to articulate that vision, but it is often difficult for people to internalize the potential enough to overcome their innate tendency to lose aversion. Many will need to see the idea achieve some success before they are willing to buy it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That's why we prefer to start with a change that is a keystone that can pave the way for one major transformation<\/strong>. At Amarillo College in Texas, it started with a simple desire to understand why students dropped out so often. Its president, Dr. Russell Lowery-Hart, has decided to invest in data analytics for better understand the key drivers of dropout rates<\/strong> and get to the root of the problem. The survey results showed a range of causes, from ongoing financial challenges, housing and food insecurity, anxiety, depression and stress, access to transportation or having to be a caregiver<\/em> primary, to the simple exhaustion of the availability of money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That investment led to one vision<\/strong> completely<\/strong> new<\/strong> how the school could understand, serve and support its students. As a result, completion rates have increased significantly. "When systems are built to drive students to success," Lowery-Hart told me, "the whole model changes, including not just economics, but our conception of the core mission."<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, Experian didn't move to the cloud all at once, but started with the implementation of internal APIs. Once the transformation team could demonstrate the business value of better access to data within the organization's boundaries, it was much easier to build a case for the full implementation of cloud technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Technology at the service of the company<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Technology is not an end in itself, but a means to an end<\/strong>. It should be at the service of the company, not the other way around. The real value of digital transformation cannot be achieved in one particular initiative or another. The ultimate goal should be a large-scale reinvention of the business that transforms the way the organization creates, delivers and captures value in the market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Andrea's apparel customer found that improving data systems allowed them to completely change the way they thought about how to design their product line. Rather than trying to react and adapt to fashion trends in the market, they were able to proactively design the apparel based on the insights they were seeing developing with their own customers on their platform. This new business model has become a key competitive advantage, has enabled the company to take a leading position in its category and has led to double-digit revenue growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experian's cloud transformation has led to Ascend, a platform that allows its customers to make data-driven credit decisions in near real time. It is now one of the company's most profitable products. For every dollar that Amarillo College invested in services and resources such as food, transportation and childcare, $ 16 in tuition was withheld, tripling completion rates. That initial success led to the funding of innovative new programs focused on democratizing skills-based education in underserved communities. Each of these transformations has been enabled by digital technology, but has had the human beings at the center<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ultimately, the most powerful use of digital tools is not to cut costs, create efficiencies, or even move faster and with greater agility, but to ask fundamentally different questions. It is through exploration<\/strong> of these new ones possibility<\/strong> that we can solve complex problems and have a more meaningful impact on the customers, employees and communities we serve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Per molti, certo la maggioranza, i computer quantistici restano un mistero. Il che non sorprende perch\u00e9 \u00e8 la stessa fisica quantistica a risultare poco digeribile ai pi\u00f9. Lo stesso Einstein la considerava di una complessit\u00e0 teorica quasi indecifrabile. Ma i computer quantistici sono comunque gi\u00e0 una realt\u00e0 concreta, anche se per poterli utilizzare efficacemente ci vorr\u00e0 un po\u2019 pi\u00f9 di tempo di quanto non ci si aspettasse.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Ma a cosa serviranno questi super computer, capaci di eclissare i calcolatori attuali e sostanzialmente mandarli in soffitta? Alcuni usi sono rendere molto pi\u00f9 veloce la scoperta<\/strong> di<\/strong> nuovi<\/strong> farmaci<\/strong>, rendere le previsioni<\/strong> meteorologiche<\/strong> sempre pi\u00f9 precise e localizzate, potenziare a livelli finora sconosciuti l\u2019intelligenza<\/strong> artificiale<\/strong> e altro ancora. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sono queste alcune delle potenzialit\u00e0 attribuite a questi rivoluzionari calcolatori, non pi\u00f9 basati sui bit, ma sui qubit (quantum bit). Queste unit\u00e0 digitali sfruttano due note propriet\u00e0 della meccanica quantistica \u2013 la sovrapposizione<\/a> e l'entanglement<\/a> \u2013 per aumentare esponenzialmente la velocit\u00e0 di calcolo e risolvere problemi che anche per i pi\u00f9 potenti supercomputer del mondo sarebbero impossibili (o richiederebbero un tempo irragionevolmente lungo).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La pi\u00f9 nota applicazione potenziale dei computer quantistici - dimostrata teoricamente da Peter Shor nel 1994 - \u00e8 la capacit\u00e0 di decifrare anche gli algoritmi crittografati utilizzati, per esempio, nel settore dei bitcoin, delle transazioni finanziarie su internet e delle firme digitali. Potenzialit\u00e0 che ha naturalmente attirato molta attenzione. Per\u00f2 c\u2019\u00e8 un problema: nessuno ancora oggi \u00e8 in grado di produrre concretamente un computer quantistico in grado di fare cose del genere e non c\u2019\u00e8 modo di sapere quando sar\u00e0 possibile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cosa dire, allora, dell\u2019era della\u00a0supremazia quantistica, annunciata da Google nel 2019 quando il suo computer Sycamore era effettivamente riuscito a risolvere in pochi minuti un calcolo che per un tradizionale computer avrebbe richiesto centinaia di anni? Si trattava, in realt\u00e0, di una dimostrazione priva di applicazioni pratiche e progettata dai ricercatori al solo scopo di mostrare le potenzialit\u00e0 del dispositivo e che serviva a dimostrare che questi computer possono effettivamente fare cose impossibili per quelli tradizionali sfruttando esperimenti progettati esattamente a questo scopo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Di recente, il docente di Fisica quantistica Sankar Das Sarma ha scritto sulla Technology Review<\/em> del MIT: \u201cI computer quantistici pi\u00f9 avanzati oggi hanno qualche dozzina di qubit fisici che causano decoerenza<\/strong> (o rumore). Costruire un computer quantistico in grado di decifrare codici RSA da tali componenti richiederebbe molti milioni se non miliardi di qubit. Solo decine di migliaia di questi verrebbero utilizzati per il calcolo, i cosiddetti qubit logici; il resto sarebbe necessario per correggere gli errori, compensando la decoerenza\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La decoerenza<\/a>, ha spiegato Signorelli in un recente articolo su La Repubblica<\/em>,<\/strong> \u00e8 il fenomeno che provoca, a causa dell\u2019interazione tra i qubit e l\u2019ambiente che li circonda, il decadimento degli stati quantistici prima che il lavoro dei qubit venga portato a termine. Questo stato \u00e8 infatti estremamente delicato: le pi\u00f9 piccole vibrazioni (anche una collisione tra particelle d\u2019aria) o dei minimi cambiamenti nella temperatura possono far uscire i qubit anticipatamente dalla sovrapposizione in cui si trovano, fornendo risultati completamente casuali. \u00c8 per questo che, per esempio, il Q System One di IBM<\/strong> \u00e8 protetto da una teca di vetro a chiusura ermetica munita di un sistema di raffreddamento prossimo allo zero assoluto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Occorre dunque ricordare che i pi\u00f9 avanzati computer quantistici di oggi hanno qualche decina di qubit fisici<\/strong>, mentre per ottenere i risultati promessi ne servirebbero milioni o miliardi. E la strada per arrivare fin l\u00ec \u00e8 dunque ancora piuttosto lunga e l\u2019avvento di veri e propri computer quantistici potrebbe essere molto pi\u00f9 distante di quanto solitamente non si dica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il raggiungimento della supremazia quantistica ci ha comunque proiettati in una nuova era, definita dagli scienziati NISQ<\/strong> (noisy intermediate-scale quantum<\/em>), intendendo la possibilit\u00e0 di sviluppare computer quantistici di taglia intermedia \u2013 cio\u00e8 con un numero ancora limitato di qubit \u2013 pur sapendo che il rumore di fondo ci permetter\u00e0 di avere soltanto un controllo parziale sui risultati che si possono ottenere. Non ancora dei computer quantistici perfetti, quindi, ma comunque utili, anche se lo stesso Das Sarma nutre qualche dubbio: \u201cL\u2019idea \u00e8 che delle piccole raccolte di qubit fisici rumorosi potrebbe comunque fare qualcosa di utile e meglio di quanto non possa fare un classico computer, ma non siamo sicuri di molte cose: quanto rumorosi? Quanti qubit? \u00c8 davvero un computer? Quali problemi degni di nota potrebbe risolvere questa macchina Nisq?\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gli esperimenti finora condotti tramite Nisq non avrebbero mostrato sostanziali vantaggi rispetto ai computer tradizionali o comunque - eccezion fatta per ambiti di ricerca molto specifici - non hanno alcun potenziale di commercializzazione. Ci sono state proposte relativo all\u2019uso di computer quantistici su piccola scala per la progettazione di farmaci o per aiutare nel campo della finanza, ma nessun paper tecnico ha finora offerto dimostrazioni convincenti che dei computer quantistici, incluse le macchine NISQ, possano portare ottimizzazioni significative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Per quanto si parli spesso dei computer quantistici come se fossero in procinto di rivoluzionare il mondo, dunque, la realt\u00e0 \u00e8 ben diversa.
