We have good news for 2022: according to our research, climate change is finally well placed on the corporate governance agenda. In fact, we interviewed over 300 company directors in 43 countries and three quarters of the respondents said they consider climate change to be very important for the strategic success of their companies.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, however, the investigations revealed one strong disconnection<\/strong> between what the boards say and what they do. For example, in our survey the 72% reported that they are confident that their company will meet its climate targets, but the 43% has not yet set any carbon reduction targets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As for Italy, a research conducted by Dynamo Academy<\/a><\/strong> is SDA Bocconi Sustainability Lab<\/a><\/strong> found that the 64% of large and medium-sized companies operating in Italy is attentive to sustainable development goals. The research, carried out on 116 companies representing the 17% of national GDP, is also significant in light of the new European regulations, such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) with which the European Commission aims to introduce common standards for the assessment of impact of companies according to ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) criteria.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other good news our research suggests is that this too gap between good intentions and climate action<\/strong> appears surprisingly easy to fill. Here, then, are ten things that every board should do in 2022 to prepare their company for this critical problem for the whole human species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conduct a quick review of the board's effectiveness on climate change.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Check out what the board knows and what it should know. Our research suggests the advice 85% needs increase their knowledge of climate issues<\/strong>, so you may need outside help just to fine-tune the questions. However, directors know better than anyone what is usually on their agenda: financial performance, executive performance, new investments, and so on. The fundamental question is: Do advisers know enough about the implications of climate change for key issues so that an effective review can be carried out?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Determine how to fill in the knowledge gaps discovered by your review.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

There cannot be an expert on every topic in a board. But do we need one specifically for climate change? Our interviewees were divided in half on this question, but to the 50% who answered "no", we ask: do you need external climate consultants <\/strong>to the council? Can we learn more from the management team (while of course continuing to monitor their performance objectively)? Is there a temporary solution, such as a short-term appointment? Or a training program? Or joining a specialized organization?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bringing new voices to meetings.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Depending on the results of our first two suggestions, you may decide that you need to renew your board members sooner or later. At a minimum, you will probably want to revamp your board update strategy to include the climate change<\/strong> in the matrix of skills. Even if you decide not to recruit new members or seek out new skills, you will most likely need to involve climate experts as observers or consultants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make climate change an explicit part of your agenda.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes, it can be a talking point in its own right. Other times, the words "climate" and "change" will appear next to "asset allocation" or "risk assessment" (or some other strategic discussion). Alternatively, if relating climate change to everything seems too disruptive, zoom in on one single business unit, product line or asset <\/strong>to make it real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bring climate change into your governance structures.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Depending on your industry or your board's level of knowledge, there will be different approaches<\/strong>. If you have a sustainability committee, there is a natural place to discuss the impact of climate change on your business. Nearly a quarter of our respondents were members of such a committee. But other structures may be equally relevant: a specialized non-executive director (NED) or a "decarbonization task force", for example.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Assign the management team to set specific targets for climate change.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If, like our respondents' 57%, you run a company that already has carbon reduction goals, consider looking beyond goals 1 and 2 to goal 3, i.e. emissions beyond your control. direct, like the operations<\/strong> in<\/strong> outsourcing<\/strong> or use<\/strong> of the<\/strong> products<\/strong>. Only 16% of companies whose executives were interviewed have already taken this step, suggesting that companies' 84% "could do better."<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Link executive hiring to climate knowledge and executive compensation to climate goals.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Establish a clear chain of executive responsibility for setting and achieving climate change goals, starting with the CEO - and connect hiring and compensation decisions. Only the 35% of our respondents say climate change is a formal requirement of their company selecting a new CEO and only the 26% that climate change is integrated into executive performance metrics<\/strong>. These tricks are too trivial to ignore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make your climate report as robust as your financial report.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Sure, the lack of universally applicable reporting standards has been an excuse for inaction in the past, but one result of COP26 is that the world will have standardized emissions reporting by 2024. Your company's auditors should be able to provide guidance. And if they can't, maybe it's time to think about switching suppliers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Use the purpose<\/em> of your company as a lens.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Reports and regulations will only take you so far. In addition to zooming in on the details (see point 4) to make climate change real, zoom in on the big picture again. If you can use your purpose (purpose<\/em>) to frame your climate-related decisions, create a platform to engage the entire company. Plus, any specific steps you take will have a better chance of success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drive climate change from the presidency.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Board chairpersons have a particularly important role to play in guiding the nine quick actions above, but even more so in ensuring that the meeting<\/strong> is set tone<\/strong> right<\/strong>. Those who sit "at the head of the table" must make climate change a priority, ensure an open and honest discussion about it and - above all - encourage reflection on how the board and the company can do even better in 2022 and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

THE BOARDS OF COMPANIES<\/strong> are they just talking about climate change? We believe this interpretation of the gap between words and actions is superficial. We prefer to think that many administrators are so overwhelmed by the scale and complexity of their environmental, social and governance (ESG) responsibilities that they don't know where to start. With these ten quick tips, we hope to give them a hand and guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Per molti, certo la maggioranza, i computer quantistici restano un mistero. Il che non sorprende perch\u00e9 \u00e8 la stessa fisica quantistica a risultare poco digeribile ai pi\u00f9. Lo stesso Einstein la considerava di una complessit\u00e0 teorica quasi indecifrabile. Ma i computer quantistici sono comunque gi\u00e0 una realt\u00e0 concreta, anche se per poterli utilizzare efficacemente ci vorr\u00e0 un po\u2019 pi\u00f9 di tempo di quanto non ci si aspettasse.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Ma a cosa serviranno questi super computer, capaci di eclissare i calcolatori attuali e sostanzialmente mandarli in soffitta? Alcuni usi sono rendere molto pi\u00f9 veloce la scoperta<\/strong> di<\/strong> nuovi<\/strong> farmaci<\/strong>, rendere le previsioni<\/strong> meteorologiche<\/strong> sempre pi\u00f9 precise e localizzate, potenziare a livelli finora sconosciuti l\u2019intelligenza<\/strong> artificiale<\/strong> e altro ancora. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sono queste alcune delle potenzialit\u00e0 attribuite a questi rivoluzionari calcolatori, non pi\u00f9 basati sui bit, ma sui qubit (quantum bit). Queste unit\u00e0 digitali sfruttano due note propriet\u00e0 della meccanica quantistica \u2013 la sovrapposizione<\/a> e l'entanglement<\/a> \u2013 per aumentare esponenzialmente la velocit\u00e0 di calcolo e risolvere problemi che anche per i pi\u00f9 potenti supercomputer del mondo sarebbero impossibili (o richiederebbero un tempo irragionevolmente lungo).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La pi\u00f9 nota applicazione potenziale dei computer quantistici - dimostrata teoricamente da Peter Shor nel 1994 - \u00e8 la capacit\u00e0 di decifrare anche gli algoritmi crittografati utilizzati, per esempio, nel settore dei bitcoin, delle transazioni finanziarie su internet e delle firme digitali. Potenzialit\u00e0 che ha naturalmente attirato molta attenzione. Per\u00f2 c\u2019\u00e8 un problema: nessuno ancora oggi \u00e8 in grado di produrre concretamente un computer quantistico in grado di fare cose del genere e non c\u2019\u00e8 modo di sapere quando sar\u00e0 possibile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cosa dire, allora, dell\u2019era della\u00a0supremazia quantistica, annunciata da Google nel 2019 quando il suo computer Sycamore era effettivamente riuscito a risolvere in pochi minuti un calcolo che per un tradizionale computer avrebbe richiesto centinaia di anni? Si trattava, in realt\u00e0, di una dimostrazione priva di applicazioni pratiche e progettata dai ricercatori al solo scopo di mostrare le potenzialit\u00e0 del dispositivo e che serviva a dimostrare che questi computer possono effettivamente fare cose impossibili per quelli tradizionali sfruttando esperimenti progettati esattamente a questo scopo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Di recente, il docente di Fisica quantistica Sankar Das Sarma ha scritto sulla Technology Review<\/em> del MIT: \u201cI computer quantistici pi\u00f9 avanzati oggi hanno qualche dozzina di qubit fisici che causano decoerenza<\/strong> (o rumore). Costruire un computer quantistico in grado di decifrare codici RSA da tali componenti richiederebbe molti milioni se non miliardi di qubit. Solo decine di migliaia di questi verrebbero utilizzati per il calcolo, i cosiddetti qubit logici; il resto sarebbe necessario per correggere gli errori, compensando la decoerenza\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La decoerenza<\/a>, ha spiegato Signorelli in un recente articolo su La Repubblica<\/em>,<\/strong> \u00e8 il fenomeno che provoca, a causa dell\u2019interazione tra i qubit e l\u2019ambiente che li circonda, il decadimento degli stati quantistici prima che il lavoro dei qubit venga portato a termine. Questo stato \u00e8 infatti estremamente delicato: le pi\u00f9 piccole vibrazioni (anche una collisione tra particelle d\u2019aria) o dei minimi cambiamenti nella temperatura possono far uscire i qubit anticipatamente dalla sovrapposizione in cui si trovano, fornendo risultati completamente casuali. \u00c8 per questo che, per esempio, il Q System One di IBM<\/strong> \u00e8 protetto da una teca di vetro a chiusura ermetica munita di un sistema di raffreddamento prossimo allo zero assoluto.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Occorre dunque ricordare che i pi\u00f9 avanzati computer quantistici di oggi hanno qualche decina di qubit fisici<\/strong>, mentre per ottenere i risultati promessi ne servirebbero milioni o miliardi. E la strada per arrivare fin l\u00ec \u00e8 dunque ancora piuttosto lunga e l\u2019avvento di veri e propri computer quantistici potrebbe essere molto pi\u00f9 distante di quanto solitamente non si dica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il raggiungimento della supremazia quantistica ci ha comunque proiettati in una nuova era, definita dagli scienziati NISQ<\/strong> (noisy intermediate-scale quantum<\/em>), intendendo la possibilit\u00e0 di sviluppare computer quantistici di taglia intermedia \u2013 cio\u00e8 con un numero ancora limitato di qubit \u2013 pur sapendo che il rumore di fondo ci permetter\u00e0 di avere soltanto un controllo parziale sui risultati che si possono ottenere. Non ancora dei computer quantistici perfetti, quindi, ma comunque utili, anche se lo stesso Das Sarma nutre qualche dubbio: \u201cL\u2019idea \u00e8 che delle piccole raccolte di qubit fisici rumorosi potrebbe comunque fare qualcosa di utile e meglio di quanto non possa fare un classico computer, ma non siamo sicuri di molte cose: quanto rumorosi? Quanti qubit? \u00c8 davvero un computer? Quali problemi degni di nota potrebbe risolvere questa macchina Nisq?\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gli esperimenti finora condotti tramite Nisq non avrebbero mostrato sostanziali vantaggi rispetto ai computer tradizionali o comunque - eccezion fatta per ambiti di ricerca molto specifici - non hanno alcun potenziale di commercializzazione. Ci sono state proposte relativo all\u2019uso di computer quantistici su piccola scala per la progettazione di farmaci o per aiutare nel campo della finanza, ma nessun paper tecnico ha finora offerto dimostrazioni convincenti che dei computer quantistici, incluse le macchine NISQ, possano portare ottimizzazioni significative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Per quanto si parli spesso dei computer quantistici come se fossero in procinto di rivoluzionare il mondo, dunque, la realt\u00e0 \u00e8 ben diversa.
